Zayin ז is the 7th letter of the Hebrew alphabet. It has two meanings--"weapon", but it's root word is "nourishment". The pictograph, similar to hieroglyphics, symbolizes a sword. Our Z word is zechor, which means "remember".
In Malachi 4:4, the letter zayin is oversized, emphasizing the importance of the sword being important in spiritual warfare. Hebrews 4:12 says the Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword. (The two edges representing the Old and New Testament) So what is the key to using a sword in fighting our battles? The psalmist knows it's all tied up in the word REMEMBER!! He's asking the Teacher to remember His Word of promise to us, because that Word is life-giving. Standing up to the classroom bully hasn't gotten rid of him, but the author is remembering the victory he had in standing up to him. Oh, he is still ticked at the idea that the sinful seem to be winning, but he refocuses on every word the Teacher has spoken, making them into songs he can sing. Even in the middle of the night, when we tend to relive our day, the student takes time to remember the name of the Lord, and recommits to keeping all he knows.
I picked "rehearse" for my word of 2021. (Another way of saying remember or recount). When I feel defeated, it's so important for me to rehearse past victories as a way of getting through. When the rude bullying happens, whether it's from an outside source or from my own mind, I try (try) to rehearse what I know to be true. I need to remember the Word of God is my weapon, but to remember something means you had to know it first. I was always a little frustrated by open book tests as a student because I wanted to know that I knew the material on my own. This is why Bible study is so important to me, because when I'm struggling, I need to be able to call to mind what I know to be true. Some things are an open book, where we can open our Bible and say "This is how I should react!" But some things are not. Sometimes we have to make a decision quickly, and we need to be able to Remember the answer. This blessing has fallen to us, that we have access to His life-giving Word.
