Psalms 101-150 are done using the SOAK method--Scripture Observation Application Kneel in prayer
S--Psalm 146
O--"Put not your trust in princes". The psalmist starts with a praise to the Lord for as long as he lives! Then turns his attention to a contrast of "The Lord" (Yahweh, the proper name of the God of Israel, also called "Elohim" which means God) with nobility and/or mortal man. There is no salvation with either, they will die and be buried just as we will. In contrast, much blessing comes to the one who hopes in God. The word hope in this case comes from the word that means to inspect or examine. So in that context, as we inspect or examine the works of the God of Jacob, we start to see the overwhelming blessing of being on His side. He is the Creator of all things, He authors our faith, He alone can truly give justice to the mistreated, He alone can truly satisfy hunger. We can only truly see and be truly free if God is at work. He lifts up, He loves right living, He watches over those who have no home and no family. And ultimately He will give out punishment to those who have wasted His blessings. The inspection and examination of the faithful works of God builds up praise in our hearts!!
A--We are overwhelmed with "experts" these days! It seems like anyone who has done a little research is suddenly The Voice on any given matter. I love how this verse leads us to do our "research" on God. (Bible Study for the Win!!!) We can follow every rabbit trail on the works of God and NEVER be disappointed in what we find. When we put our trust in princes, experts, mere mortals, we can usually dig up some inconsistency that undermines their argument and expertise. But not with God!! As opinions and research change daily, God doesn't. He will never be dead and buried, He will always be alive and working well. Praise the Lord!!
K--Help me to not be swayed by everyone's opinions, but only by Your Word.
