“And he said, "Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord." And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.”
vs 11-12
Elijah ran from Jezebel, from Jezreel to Beersheba, which is 100 miles. In vs 10 and 14, the ESV says jealous. Other versions say zealous, and I think that makes more sense. (And they do come from the same Latin root.) You gotta love a set of verses that encourage “nap. eat. repeat.”

We used to go to church camp every year and it was AMAZING! A week of disconnecting from every day life with like-minded people, worshipping, and watching God move in big ways. The week after church camp was usually the lowest of lows. We were tired, back in with “the world”, and it seemed like no one even served God here.
Elijah is depressed and lonely after a mountaintop experience with God. God shows Elijah that following him has some big, loud, dramatic moments. But the noise and flash are not a guarantee that God is in it. Sometimes God comes in a low whisper, in a time when rest is the only form of worship you can muster. And it’s just as powerful.
When I’m overwhelmed, I will rest in You. When I’m depressed and lonely, I will look for You where You are, instead of where I think You should be.
