Rehoboam is continuing to lead his nation the wrong direction, worse than ever before! The king of Egypt, who had given refuge to Jeroboam in the past, loots Jerusalem and the temple, taking all the gold shields Solomon had made. (Chapter 10:14-17) Rehoboam replaces them, this time made with bronze. Bronze prices today are $1.50/ pound. Gold is $25,063.20/pound!!! Gold is a precious metal; bronze is an alloy metal, made of two or more metals. These shields represent a divided heart in the king, no longer even pretending to follow God’s commands for His temple. He is living in fear behind shields of scrap metal, when he could be living in peace behind God’s best!
It’s easy to smh at Rehoboam. But then I see myself often trading “God’s best” for “good enough to get by”. And just like Rehoboam, that leads to nothing but fear and anxiety.
Help me to always look for Your best.
