According to this verse, Jeroboam knew the curse that withered his hand was from God and only God could heal it. He knows that the calves and altars he’s built have no real saving power. However, he tells the man of God “pray to the Lord YOUR God”. Although he knows the power is God’s alone, he refuses to identify him as the one true God.
Jeroboam has built his kingdom on fear. Fear drove him to build altars and idols to prevent his people from returning to Jerusalem. Fear of being overthrown, as seen by his reaction to the prophecy of Josiah, one that would not be fulfilled for another 340 Years!! I need the reminder that decisions based on fear over faith cannot stand or succeed. If I know the power is from God alone, then my decisions and actions should reflect it.
Only obedience, trust, and faith in You, Lord, will make my path straight.
