1 Kings 12

Rehoboam is crowned king of Israel. The Israelites immediately ask for relief from their heavy burdens. (Likely tax related). Rehoboam skipped over experienced wisdom and trusted in friends. But all was in God’s hands to accomplish His will. The kingdom divided when Israel stomped off in anger; only Judah stayed. Jeroboam becomes king of the Northern Territory of Israel, Samaria. Then Jeroboam sets up all kinds of “tourist attractions”, mostly in the form of idols, to prevent his people from returning to Jerusalem to worship.

I read recently that some scriptures are descriptive and some are prescriptive. In other words, descriptive texts are just describing an event and have no specific application to our lives. Maybe they are just setting up a scene or event, or maybe it is a specific person’s actual story. Prescriptive is when you can apply teaching and doctrines learned to your own life. (Of course there are scriptures that Are both ðŸ¤”) This part of scriptures feels more descriptive than prescriptive to me. I’ve been reading in Job and this chapter today reminded me of Job 32:6-10.
The terms “old” and “young” aren’t necessarily guideposts to wisdom. We should be looking for wisdom in words, actions, and advice more than age.

All of Your Word is important. Help me to know You through your story.
