Solomon married 700 times, and had 300 mistresses, turning his heart from God to their foreign gods. Two mentioned—Ashtoreth was the goddess of fertility, sexuality, and war; Chemosh was a god who required the sacrifice of children. God raised 2 enemies against Solomon and his kingdom; one enemy came on his own, Jeroboam. God made His new covenant with Jeroboam, a servant of Solomon.
I feel like I’ve been watching a movie, loving the main character and cheering for him, only to watch in horror as he slips in to the role of the bad guy.
3 chapters ago, approx 20 years ago, Solomon prayed the most beautiful prayer of dedication and blessing. He seemed, and I believe was, wholly devoted to God. But God specifically commanded Israel not to marry women who worshipped foreign gods, and Solomon intentionally disobeyed, hundreds of times!!! God fulfills both aspects of His covenant—the government covenant that was conditional on Solomon’s actions, which resulted in the majority of the land being promised to Jeroboam, a SERVANT of Solomon; and the royal covenant that was unconditional, based on God’s eternal promise to His chosen people. The land where Solomon chose to build the high places to false gods is a testament to both the conditional and unconditional covenant of God. The physical son of David (Solomon) built a temple against the will of God on the mount of Olives. Jesus, the eternal son of David according to God’s unchanging covenant, completed the will of God and ascended to heaven from the very same Mount of Olives (Acts 1:9-12)
Praise to God for His eternal promise, that can’t be derailed by our evil intentions.
