Daleth--Psalm 119:25-32 (The Aleph Tav of Psalm 119)

The bent shape of the  letter daleth ד symbolizes a needy person who is bent over.  Remember the gimel was like a rich man running to a poor man to offer charity?  The daleth is the poor man.  The little hook at the top , called the ear, is said to be listening for the approaching gimel and charity.  The letter represents lowliness and the consciousness of possessing nothing of one's own.  (hebrew4christians dot com) Our d word today is davekah which means to cling, cleave, or keep close.

This student is struggling! He opens up to the teacher about the path he's been on, and the Teacher responds.  The student's ears are lifted, listening for something he can understand and cling to.  The struggle has him feeling so defeated, and he needs the charity and the rich knowledge of the Teacher to continue.  He may have been tempted by-and even chosen-false ways before.  But, he is changing his major from false ways to the Way of God.  Now that he's made up his mind, this student is determined.  He's not going to just sit in class and let the knowledge come to him.  He is choosing the way of faithfulness; he is setting the rules before him; he is clinging to his studies; he is running with it!!  His heart is open and ready!

Like the daleth, I am the poor man.  I am nothing but that without the charity of our rich and generous Teacher.  His word has the ability to give life and strength.  We cannot simulate anything like it on our own.  We cannot just say "Ok, I think I've learned enough, now I'm going to go do it."  To be a true student of the word of God, we have to decide to put false ways aside and choose the way of faithfulness.  We have to let go of the dust we have been clinging to and cling to the word of God.  Every step we take, whether walking or running, must be guided according to what God has commanded.  I pray our hearts will be enlarged to make room for the charity of our generous Teacher.
