S--Psalm 143
O--David is crying out in prayer once again. It's possible he's still writing from the cave, according to the wording in verse 3. But he is definitely writing from a place of crisis. He asks for God to listen and, guided by His characteristics of faithfulness and righteousness, to answer! David asks God not to judge him for his weakness, because such is the way of any human trying to follow God. He's crushed, tired, in hiding, and he's sick emotionally, mentally,, and physically. David replays all the good that God has done, he reaches in his memory for every time God came through for him like a thirsty man reaches for a glass of water. This rehearsal leads him to include a moment of praise! He needs God to come to his rescue again and he knows He will based on God's unwavering, stubborn, relentless love. David has come before the only One who can rescue him, but he doesn't just want bailed out of a bad situation. He wants to learn to walk in the ways of God; he wants to be filled with the breath of God as his own breath catches in his throat in fear and stress. David longs for the level ground, the sure footing that can only come from a life led by God. He proves that he isn't seeking deliverance for his own gain by promising to give all glory to the Great Name of God, who is righteous and steadfast. He trusts ultimately in the covenant of God, as Master to servant.
A--I was listening to a sermon today (Alistair Begg--"Notes from the Flyleaf of my Bible") He said about prayer-- "If our prayer is meager, it's only because we consider it to be supplemental instead of fundamental." David's "prayer life" is definitely fundamental! He goes to God often and with everything. David's prayers change me. They help me to understand both the majesty and the intimacy of a life of prayer to God. I offer up way too many supplemental, "last resort" prayers. Prayers that in essence say "I've tried everything else, so now I'll give God a chance to come through." Why am I surprised when my spirit feels weak and tired? We are created to need this communication with God, yet it's so often neglected. I want that to change in my life.
K--I pray to long for you as much as I long for any physical thing.
