Psalm 120

Psalm 101-150 are done using the SOAK method--Scripture Observation Application Kneel in prayer

S--Psalm 120

O--A song of anguish.  The author is in trouble and calls to the One who can help, the Lord.  And He answered!!  He is being tormented by his enemies, they are lying about him and deceiving others.  He asks God to deliver him from this upsetting situation.  His mind wanders to what kind of payback his tormentors might deserve; sharp arrows and the roots of a broom tree, which were used as charcoal. (I picture the arrows put into the fire and sent over to his enemies.)
He immediately goes to worst case scenario--that he's stuck living among the enemy (namely, the descendants of Japheth and Ishmael).  He is working for peace with them, but as soon as they hear him speak "Peace", they decide they'd rather war.

A--I can relate to this chapter because my mind also IMMEDIATELY goes to worst case scenarios.  It's hard to "allow" God to comfort me when my mind is racing to "Woe is me!"  This chapter changes me in the first 2 verses, before he gets distracted by his rant.  In my distress, I should start with calling on God and not dwelling in the worries.  When I'm thinking clearly, I KNOW God hears and delivers.

K--Oh Lord, I'd rather trust your deliverance than focus on my enemy.  Give me a clear mind and trusting thoughts.
