We have confessed that Jesus is an apostle (early Christian teacher) and high priest, and we know that He was faithful to God in everything. (Wrap up of what they and we’ve learned in the first 2 chapters). Tying together the big story of scripture with Moses and Jesus. Moses was a servant in God’s house, but Jesus is the beloved Son.
Pivotal thought “we are his house”. Psalm 95:7-11 is quoted. We shouldn’t rest in guarding our hearts from evil, and helping others guard theirs, by urging one another Every Day not to fall into sin, where there is not the promise of rest.
Jesus is the true and better Moses. Moses’ life imperfectly foreshadowed Jesus’ perfection. The author knows everyone in his audience will know Moses and his story. The Israelites under Moses’ guidance complained their way through 40 years in the wilderness. Although Moses was faithful, he ultimately cracked and it cost him his chance to see their Promised Land.
I could hardly believe my eyes when I started reading. This just fits our crazy world right now!! We are on Day 4 of official quarantine and how many of us have the grouchies? So we can in small part understand the Israelites frustration of 40 years of not being where they wanted to be. But we’ve been given wonderful instruction on how to combat that. First, encourage each other. Every single day, urge ourselves and each other to guard our hearts from the sin that deceives us. Second, as churches are forced to close their doors for at least a couple of weeks, “we are His house!” The building doesn’t make or break the covenant God made with us through Jesus Christ! And finally, we are in a time where the choices of faith or fear, trust or unbelief, callousness or compassion are literally right in front of us. We have come to share in Christ, and if we hold on to that confidence until the end, it’s the only way we will find rest
