Adonijah is the 4th son of David. He purposely didn’t invite anyone who might speak out against his right to be king. Vs 6 reveals David’s failure as Adonijah’s father to provide him discipline and accountability. (never, at any time.) Solomon is the son God promised would be king (1 Chronicles 28:5).
Adonijah seemed to be going through the motions he’d seen--sacrifice, great numbers, feasts. But they were to false gods and to himself. He’d surrounded himself with a team, but not men of God. It’s clear he didn’t consult God in any of his plans.
Confidence in a plan does not necessarily mean its from God. Speaking convincingly to others and convincing yourself does not force God’s hand your way. A great amount of followers is not stronger than the One True God. We should surround ourselves with godly friends who will encourage us to follow God. The people we invite to walk beside us should not be ones who exalt us as we exalt ourselves. A kingdom built on self and our own desires is full of fear—fear of being caught, fear of being overthrown, fear of punishment—all obvious in Adonijah’s reaction to King Solomon. A kingdom built on God’s promise will stand.
Help me to recognize that you have redeemed my soul out of every adversity. I want to always walk beside people who will encourage me in Your ways.
