The verses before John 3:16

Does anyone know what these are? The one on the right is called a caduceus.  It’s a staff carried by Hermes in Greek Mythology and often (mistakenly) used as a symbol for medicine.  The one on the left is a rod of Asklepios ,  carried by Asklepios, the Greek god of healing and medicine.  It is more correctly used as the symbol for medicine.

The myth is that the sick people would pray to the god Asklepios, and then immediately sleep.  If they dreamed of snakes they were healed.

But the true and better story ....In Numbers 21:6-9, the Israelites spoke against God and their leader, Moses.  So God sent fiery serpents in their midst, many died.  The Israelites asked Moses to pray for them.  So he went to God; God said to make a bronze serpent, put it on a pole, and lift it in front of the people.  All who looked on it, lived.

Then in John 3:14, Jesus Himself tells Nicodemus “Just as Moses raised the serpent in the wilderness, so must Jesus (the Son of Man) be high and listed up, so that whoever looks on Him will have eternal life.”

So...this week, as you think of these symbols, pray for our healthcare workers.  I have several that I love and pray for personally, and also for all as a whole.  But also remember when you pray, that you are praying to  Christ Jesus, the God of healing, both in this life and forever.
