A Tale of Two Ladies--Lady Wisdom Proverbs 3

In Proverbs 2, we saw several conditional statements from the father to his son.  If you do this, then this will happen. We learned that if we truly listen, wisdom will be found; and if we actively pursue it, wisdom will open our eyes to more.  In Proverbs 3:1-10, we see instruction and blessing statements.  Solomon knows that our human nature tends to love the blessings more than the Blesser, so he reminds his son not to despise or grow tired of the discipline—the discipline comes because of the loyal, stubborn, unwavering love of our Father.

In Proverbs 1-2, we learned to pursue wisdom.   With much value comes much danger; but wisdom protects us, guards and guides us as we push through the evil, dark mob to take hold of the treasure.  Wisdom led the son to the land in 2:20-21. and so in Proverbs 3, the father instructs the son how to dwell in this land of wisdom.  How to live God’s way in God’s world.  Don't forget what you’ve learned and what you know—keep it close, bind it around your neck, write it on the tablet of your heart. wear it like precious jewels. Wisdom is the tree of life, going all the way back to the garden of Eden. Hold fast to her.  Meditate on her, dwell on her.    (This is where we need to remember wisdom is being personified as a woman, but is not an actual woman  It's a learning device, a proverb, a parable pointing to a greater truth.)  When we meditate on all we know of wisdom-a gift from God- we have security, sure steps, no fear, sweet sleep, and confidence with God.  We are protected from terror, ruin, and fear.

The father also begins to  introduce how wisdom will affect how we treat others.  There will be evil in our midst no matter where we go; wisdom will guide us to not let bad company corrupt good character.  The LORD's presence is all it will take to bring the fools to disgrace.

We started this study with a statement "Proverbs are principles, not promises."  So did chapters 2 and 3 confuse you?  (That's a YES from me!!) When we look through the lens of what we consider treasure, it can be confusing.  Long life, riches, honor, pleasantness, peace, blessing are all promised, just not always the way we expect them.  Lady Wisdom has both hands filled with goodness, long life in one and riches and honor in the other.  But maybe not long life here, or riches and honor HERE.  When we've watched loved ones who are saints (children of God) suffer with sickness, we pray for healing and extended life.  And we picture that a certain way.  But as a believer, they are more alive in heaven after death than they ever were here!   Healing came, just not in the way we expected.   Meditating on the Word of God is sweet on earth, dwelling on His promises reduces anxiety, gives us sweet sleep, sure steps, and confidence.  But to dwell eternally with God fulfills the principle and the promise, and nothing we desire on earth can compare with it. 💓
