Believe and Speak--The Only Son of God, Eternally Begotten of The Father

                                                        John 3:16
 Luke 1:35
Psalm 2:7
John 1:14
Mark 1:1
Luke 4:41
John 6:68-69
Matthew 26:63-64
John 20:30-31
Proverbs 30:4
2 Corinthians 4:13

We are starting with the most familiar verse on this subject, arguably the most familiar verse in the whole Bible! John 3:16 and Matthew 26:64 are red-letter verses, Jesus declaring Himself the Son of God. Each of the gospels refer to Jesus as the Son of God, with that being John's primary focus. Psalm 2:7 (obviously before Jesus' birth 😏) quotes Yahweh telling of His begotten Son. The angel comes to Mary in Luke 1:35, announcing that she will give birth to a Holy Child, the Son of God. Demons and disciples recognized Him as the Son of God--they both believed, but with very different outcomes. With His crucifixion imminent, Jesus made sure His accusers knew that He is the Son of God, which they considered blasphemy. The whole account of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is written to this end--"That you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His Name." John 20:21

We will be developing our understanding of the ministry of Christ Jesus over the next two weeks. Today our focus word is begotten. I really liked this quote by CS Lewis, which puts a hard idea to grasp on a lower shelf for us.

“We don't use the words begetting or begotten much in modern English, but everyone still knows what they mean. To beget is to become the father of: to create is to make. And the difference is this. When you beget, you beget something of the same kind as yourself. A man begets human babies, a beaver begets little beavers and a bird begets eggs which turn into little birds. But when a man makes something, like a statue, it's not a real man, it just looks like one.  So what God begets is God, and what God creates is man."

There's no doubt that the Trinity is a deep subject; people have written books about it, so we cannot hope to cover it in one blog! But I know we are thinking women, and we can make the connection. Jesus, Son of God, the only One begotten. One of my favorite verses is Proverbs 30:4--"Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name, and what is His Son's name? Surely you know!" I may not be able to perfectly articulate the mystery of our Triune God, but I know His name AND the name of His Son. And because I know and believe, and because you know and believe, so we also speak. 💓
