פ Pe is the 17th letter of our study. The word pe means mouth--and by extension--word, expression, speech, or breath. The letter pe follows the letter ayin (yesterday's letter for eye) to teach us the proper order--first the eye sees and understands, then the mouth can express what was seen. 2 Corinthians 4:13 illustrates this--"Since we have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, 'I believed, and so I spoke,' we also believe, and so we also speak". Our letter word is "pelaovt" which means wonderful.
The words spoken by the Teacher are wonderful, and the student treasures them. The Teacher speaks and illuminates any darkness, even to the most simple. The author is ready to take what he has seen and understood and SPEAK it. He knows his ability to express the greatness of God has to come directly from the Teacher Himself, who is full of grace to those who love Him. The psalmist has a real desire to walk and live the proper way he's been taught; he doesn't want to stumble and fall. He doesn't want to cause anyone else to stumble and fall. He's moved to tears when he realizes there are people living their lives, never knowing the unwavering, stubborn love of God.
Do I think the words of God are wonderful? I like to say I do, but do I treat reading the Bible as a joy or a chore? When I study, my mind is filled with the knowledge of God. But it's a process. Seeing and understanding is the first step, and we are taking it together. But all the knowledge in the world isn't enough if we keep it to ourselves. We need to speak it. There's a world out there unaware of the greatest Love of all, which should move us to tears and move us to speak. Jeremiah 20:9 says "If I say, 'I will not mention Him, or speak anymore in His Name,' there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot." I want to be so on fire by what I have seen and known of God that I cannot keep it in!!
