Pilgrim Songs

Hello everyone! We will be starting a new study Monday, March 15 called “Pilgrim Songs”.  You may think I have the wrong holiday since this will lead up to Good Friday, not Thanksgiving 🥰 But in Deuteronomy 16:16, the Israelites were commanded to make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem for worship and sacrifice three times a year.  The journey to the temple could take up to 5 days, so the pilgrims sang songs to pass time as they traveled.  We find these songs in Psalm 120-134, called “The Songs of Ascent”.

Passover was the biggest of the three festivals.  It commemorates God rescuing His beloved people from slavery in Egypt.

We celebrate Easter on April 4 this year.  It commemorates Jesus dying, being buried, and rising again to rescue us from the slavery of sin.  This event happened at Passover to Jesus, who was raised as a devout Jewish man.  He likely grew up singing these ancient songs.   And as He lives His last week on earth, maybe He could hear the pilgrims coming into Jerusalem, singing these familiar lyrics.

So all that to say, we will be studying these Psalms, one a day, for 15 days.  We will also look for ways Jesus addressed and even fulfilled the lyrics. 💛💛
