S--Psalm 125
O--Mount Zion is a mountain in Jerusalem. Sometimes its used as another name for Jerusalem. Either way, it cannot be moved; so those who trust in the Lord should pattern their lives after the eternal, unmovable nature of the mountain. And, continuing that thought, the author leads his listeners to look around at the topography as they enter Jerusalem for worship. The mountains surrounding Jerusalem draw an obvious parallel to the surrounding presence of the Lord in the lives of His chosen people. The rule of wickedness can't possibly last on land promised by God Himself, because God does not tempt His people with wrongdoing. Once again, this leads the pilgrims to a heart of praise and prayer. Praise for the continued goodness of God; and prayer for the continued protection of the upright.
A--I am loving the picture being drawn for us in these Songs of Ascents. I can picture the pilgrims heading to Jerusalem; the trudging and exhaustion is made a little easier by the cadence of the songs. As they sing each verse, they are drawn to remember bits and pieces of their history, their promised land, their enemies, their destination--all through the filter of God's abiding presence and love. This chapter leads them to shake off the exhaustion and to stand firm. I need to follow their lead and look for ways to stand firm in my trust in the Lord, who abides and surrounds me forever.
K--Do good , O Lord, to those who are good, and to those who are upright in their hearts. May that be said of me. 💓
