S--Psalm 108
O-- David the musician worships God from the overflow of his heart. He is stubborn in his devotion to God, making a decision before the sun rises to devote his day to God. He uses the phrase "I will" 4 times in the first 3 verses. He is determined to sing, to view the sunrise from the place where he prays, and to give thanks and praise. He starts by saying he, David, is steadfast in his determination to praise; then he says "But my single-minded devotion to you doesn't reach nearly as high as Yours to me." 💗 He is driven to prayer and praise with the comparison.
David reminds himself of a promise of God that he originally recorded in Psalm 60:5-12 God has called out joy over His chosen people; He has laid out a plan and purpose for them, His treasured possession. But God also has a plan for the enemies of His beloved Israel, to place them under His feet in victory. David is a musician, but he's also a warrior king. He wants to see the promised victory over those who have so long stood against them. But he knows the victory only comes through the power of God, so he goes to God in intercession for their armies. With God, the army can march forward vigorously and fearlessly, because it is God who wins!!
A-- There's something about making a vow first thing in the morning before the distractions of the day draw us. This chapter changes me by teaching me to devote my day to Him; to compare my devotion to Him with His devotion to me. It's not going to be even close, but it should lead me to a place of praise and thankfulness. I need to be single-minded in my devotion to God, to give thanks to Him, to praise Him--not just in my own heart, but to those around me. I should rehearse the promises of God from my own story, knowing that any victory is from His hand alone. Knowing that, I can face anything without fear.
K--Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the earth!
