Melchizedek’s story is recorded in Genesis 14:18-20. Not much is known about Him. Some ideas—an appearance of the archangel Michael (chief of God’s armies); a pre-incarnate appearance of Christ (before His birth as a human, Jesus); or an actual, historical person. Abraham tithed (tenth) to Melchizedek after Melchizedek blessed him. The priestly line was the tribe of Levi; Jesus was born through the tribe of Judah.
Melchizedek was greater than Abraham, obvious when he blessed him and Abraham gave tithes to him. But no matter who Melchizedek is, Jesus is greater! Jesus didn’t come through the legal priestly line, or the unsecured line of Levi, He came to be High Priest on the power of His Own Perfect Life. The law was a shadow of things to come; the picture of the hundreds of sacrifices DAILY was just a picture of the High Priest promised by God Himself. Christ Jesus took the title of High Priest and offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice, once for all. He laid down His life so He could sign into existence a better covenant. He is not a distant priest behind a curtain, but a Son who has been made perfect Forever!
This chapter changes me because it reminds me ALL of my hope is in Jesus. He is able to save me (and you) all the way to the end, always bringing my name (and yours) before the Father, in whose promises we are anchored. Jesus is the true and better Melchizedek. Jesus is the true and better high priest. He has fulfilled every requirement to secure us a better covenant. He has no rival. He has no equal. Jesus. Is. Better
